Swimming with Sharks in Cape Cod

Ever since the movie Jaws was released in 1975, sharks have been viewed as threatening predators that have a penchant for humans and fishing boats. And since humans are attracted to danger, all the more they want to see for themselves these frightening sea creatures. So where is the best place to go for some great white shark sightings?

shark sightings on cape codWell, everyone knows that the Steven Spielberg movie was set in a fictitious town called Amity Island – which actually is Martha’s Vineyard, an island south of Cape Cod in Massachusetts. And yes, there have been plenty of news this year about sharks in Cape waters this year. Yes again, that lifeguards need to evacuate all swimmers from the water until the sharks are gone, just like in the movies.

Even though there had been decades of decline of great white sharks off the Eastern U.S. and Canada, their number appears to be surging again after conservation efforts. Plus, there is a great availability of seals in Massachusetts, which are the favorite meal of these carnivores.

From fewer than two every year to more than 20 annually for the last few years, Cape Cod has been seeing more and more shark fins circling the waters. In Chatham, an estimated 12 to 14 feet long great white shark was spotted in August, prompting harbor officials to close the area from swimming. At least 14 great white sharks were seen by the state’s marine researchers off Chatham. These visits have something to do with water temperature so they stick around until October. Once the temperature drops below 60 degrees, they leave the area for Florida.

Is the increasing number of sharks surrounding Cape Cod creating terror and pandemonium among tourists and locals? The reaction has been quite the opposite, it seems. CapeCodOnline.com reports that it has drawn more attention than ever and tourists are arriving in droves in the summer to catch a glimpse of these rare animals in the wild.

Chatham Gables Inn, a Cape Cod bed and breakfast, has seen an increase in bookings for the entire summer and even stretching until autumn, which is its off season. Shark-themed souvenirs and apparel have also become a staple for many tourists, young and old. In fact, sales have grown about 500 percent, according to retail stores in Chatham.

So if you’re thinking of doing your own “shark investigation”, plan a trip to Cape Cod next summer and book early because there’s a reason why this place is known for a summer destination.
